Young Women of Distinction

YOUNG WOMEN, PLEASE JOIN US!!!

Young Women of Distinction is a membership based organization dedicated to empowering young women to discover their greatness and live their legacy. We are dedicated to preserving the legacies of women of color through the education of young women, between the ages of 5 and 18.

YWD was designed to enhance cultural and political awareness and to provide support to young women and the community. Our cultural heritage program will enable young women of color to study historical aspects of the Afro-American experience as a way of understanding what it means to be a young woman of color. The program aims to facilitate improvement in confidence, racial attitudes, self-esteem, knowledge, and ability to relate constructively to others.

YWD members are involved in various service-learning and community service projects. Educational and cultural programs are the heart of the YWD. By sponsoring high quality activities and events, YWD strives to accomplish its mission of promoting awareness of and appreciation for the African American experience. We also produce productions such as plays and other theatrical productions around people of color.

YWD offers out-of-school time cultural programs, camps and events throughout African American Heritage Month and Women’s History Month.  When school is out for the day, for parent-teacher conferences or professional development, etc, we will sponsor day trips to various cultural sites.

YWD has partnered with Fort Foote Elementary school to offer young women the opportunity to experience our programs. Young women of color at Fort Foote Elementary receive free membership to YWD.

We are making some major changes to the organization for fiscal year 2009 beginning in January.  One major change: We will no longer have "meetings".  Instead, on a monthly basis, we will have Girl Power Hours.   GPH will be monthly mixers where the young women will have the opportunity to engage in self-defense, nutrition, public relations, image consulting, yoga, fashion design, and more.  Meetings will take place on the 4th Thursdays of the month.  GPH is available to young women, ages 5 to 18.   We will offer other programs monthly to engage young women in a variety of activities from cultural studies to media literacy

“THE FORT FOOTE PARTNERSHIP”

Fort Foote Elementary School and Fort Foote Baptist Church have joined to form the “Fort Foote Partnership”.  We are excited to announce our newest student program—the Lovely Little Ladies and the Big Buddies Mentoring programs.

As part of the planning stages of our mentoring program we decided to do a mentoring program pilot, which ran May 5th through June 11th.  Sessions were held every Monday and Thursday from 3:45 to 5:45pm.  We focused on “character building” activities and health and fitness.  We culminated the pilot program with a banquet at Fort Foote Baptist church on Friday,  June 13th.

Our students are well deserving of an after-school program committed to helping them build positive character and camaraderie.  The mentoring program is designed to boost student achievement and foster an environment that promotes positive self-concept and a sense of community.

We are in the planning stages for the 2008-2009 mentoring program.  Surveys are available for anyone interested in participating in the program as a mentor, tutor, presenter, or activity coordinator.

Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please contact the school at 301.749.4230 and ask for Ms Darlene Kindred, Parent Liaison and Fort Foote Partnership Coordinator.
